Off peak rail fares higher in UK than across Europe

The Liberal Democrats are claiming that off peak rail fares are higher in UK than anywhere else in Europe. The UK political party has calculated that £10 ticket will take you 842 kilometers in Serbia but just 42k here. That is the equivalent of London to the Swiss Alps as opposed to London to Basildon!

And similar results can be found with rail travel in Latvia, Czech Republic and Italy. In fact an off peak return in the UK offers poorer value than a single ticket from over half the countries in Europe.
All in all, travellers in the UK seem to get a very poor deal on rail travel. Although it may also highlight to UK travellers what a competitive pricing option rail travel is across Europe. With Eurotunnel offering a way in to Europe from the UK by train, train travel is a viable option for the UK traveller.
