Winter holiday bookings down, customers paying the price

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Owner of First Choice and Thomson, TUI, has reported that sales of winter holidays were down by a fifth. However, they have been able to offset some of this loss by upping their prices by 11%. It has been a mixed season with summer holiday bookings and long haul holidays down but with less availability maintaining prices.

So is this good news or bad news. Well at least one of the big UK operators is not about to disappear in a puff of recession smoke. However, how happy are you that they are restricting holiday availability to keep prices high?

Flybe to Leeds and Bradford from Gatwick

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Great news for UK holiday travelers as Flybe are expanding their flight base by restoring flights between Leeds Bradford and London Gatwick. This is particularly good news as it follows BMI’s decision to axe the route earlier this year.

Flybe will operate a new three times daily (twice daily on weekends) service on June 29 using Bombardier Q400 aircraft.

The airline’s chief commercial officer, Mike Rutter, said: “The new service demonstrates Flybe’s commitment to the region, continuing to help the local economy through the development of affordable and convenient business and leisure travel options.”

Inter Continental Hotels which includes the Holiday Inn chain has revealed a drop in new year bookings and has warned that there is currently little sign if improvement.  The company, ehich is based in Windsor, has revealed that some of their key indicators were showing a steep decline with trading conditions being very tough.

Despite this, the good news for Holiday Inn customers is that the chain has embarked upon a £700 million refurbishment programme for its global properties.

The rise of the very short break

Friday, February 20th, 2009

As the recession takes its toll there has been a surge in the number of holiday makers taking short one night stop over breaks.  Research by Hotels.com has shown that bookings on these short holiday breaks has increased by 29% with searches for overnight breaks rising 530%.

In the UK popular, one of the favourite cities for an overnight stop is Brighton with bookings up 140%.  The Quality Hotel, a UK hotel directory, has seen a similar trend with overnight and weekend break bookings increasing significantly this year.  Brighton tends to be a popular short break location because it is within easy reach of London, but other towns & cities are attracting short breaks including Nottingham, Bristol, Bath, Southampton, Great Yarmouth and Blackpool.

Does Spain have to sell itself as the Bahamas?

Monday, February 16th, 2009

Now like me, you are probably thinking that the beaches in Spain are one of its best features and would do a more than adequate job of selling the country to tourists across the World.  Strangely, though it would appear that Spanish tourist board were not quite so confident in their own beaches.  In a recent marketing campaign used pictures of a beach in the Bahamas… they even went to the effort of changing the sandy colour to a lighter shade to mirror the great Spanish look.

The advert was to promote the north eastern region and was launched by the Costa Brava, Pyrenees Girona Tourism with the slogan ‘you still have many things left to discover’.  One of these things obviously being that the beach featured was not actually to be found in Spain!

So why was the picture used?  Simply because the Tourist Board did not have a good enough quality picture of their own beaches… apparently though it is not the picture that matters but what it symbolises.  Interesting, I can just hear travel agents using a similar line to explain why the hotel you saw in the brochure wasn’t finished when you got there.

As you can imagine this whole episode has caused a certain amount of resentment in Spain.  And we would echo there displeasure – Spain has great beaches and is an ideal holiday destination… you don’t need a picture of the Bahamas to sell it and, with millions of tourists a year, I am sure someone has managed to capture the beauty of Spain on film.

British still set on summer holidays in 2009

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

Owner of Thomson Holidays, TUI has reported stronger British demand for summer holidays in recent weeks. Research conducted by TUI suggests that 87% of British customers will take an overseas holiday in 2009.

Likewise travel websites Find Holiday Parks and The Self Catering Guide have also reported a very strong demand for summer holidays throughout January for holidays in Europe but also in the UK.

Although the recession is being analysed to death in the media it would appear that for the UK holiday maker their holiday may be one of the last things they choose to cut back on.
