Free fun in Great Yarmouth

Great Yarmouth is one of the main coastal holiday towns in Norfolk. There is an abundance of attractions to keep the family entertained. However if you want a break from the beach and something for free there is a little sweet shop in Regent Road, that shows you how rock is made.

My children were fascinated as they had not seen how rock was made, something I remember from my childhood as amazing seeing Yarmouth Rockhow they take something so big and make it into a small stick of rock!

We saw the process from the beginning where they were making the letters out of huge stripes of rock mixture, the only letter we recognised being made was the ‘Y’. Once they had made all the letters they then stretched the rock before snapping a piece off and showing us the word ‘Yarmouth’.Yarmouth Rock 2

Once the letters were put together and after lots of layers of rock mixture were added to the roll they were left with a massive stick of rock.

After rolling the rock by hand it was put into the ‘rock rolling machine’ and out the other end appeared a long thin stick of rock. More hand rolling produced the stick of rock you could then buy in the shop. Not that particular stick of rock but others previously made.

Yarmouth Rock 3This was a very enjoyable surprise find as we went to Great Yarmouth in February and many of the ‘main’ attractions were not yet open. The rock sold in the shop was not extensive and my children highly recommend you try some as they loved the pieces they bought.
